Some more context by author Guido van Hengel:
The project Pets or Pests? arose from a shared fascination with so-called ‘liminal species’: animals that live close to and within human society and are partially dependent on the waste left behind by humans.

Recently, there has been much debate in both the Dutch media and academia about the social nuisance caused by pigeons, seagulls, ring-necked parakeets, rats, and mice. More than statistics alone, public imagination plays a major role in shaping perceptions of these animals.
Three illustrators and one writer worked on visual essays focusing on rats, stray pigeons, and ring-necked parakeets. In doing so, they also touched upon broader topics such as public health and safety, urban planning, human–animal conflicts, and the proximity of our waste.
The project is funded by Fonds voor Bijzondere Journalistieke Projecten (BJP) & Cross Comix Rotterdam
